A fresh eye on the Chinese scene

rom New York to Paris, China is decidedly in the limelight… After the Armory Show, which devoted its fifth "Focus" to it,
the programme of Art Paris Art Fair included a window onto contemporary Chinese creation. The two events each involved different casts, with only the 10 Chancery Lane Gallery of Hong Kong participating in both. The choice of China was a timely one. Firstly, because the fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China involves a series of events in Paris, including the fair – which was in the end at the heart of these in March. It also coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping's official visit to the capital, and some extremely lucrative contracts… The other reason, and a significant one in the eyes of Art Paris director Guillaume Piens, is that the view we had of this constantly changing scene was somewhat out of date, too often associated with clichés like realism, socialism and Pop art. In short, the time had really come to blow away the cobwebs. And off they blew! A platform of galleries – ten from China and three from Hong Kong – presented a selection summing up today's creation to perfection, with the work of ninety Chinese artists. For

gallery owner Xing Dong Cheng, it was "the first time that a European fair had paid a tribute of this scope and quality to the Chinese scene." Some galleries like the Red Bridge Gallery were participating in a European fair for the first time. Its director Albert Dou told us, in the language of Voltaire, "After thirty years of materialism and economic development, China's rebirth needs to be expressed through culture." His stand, dedicated to the painters Tang Zhigang, Po Shui and Liu Wei (all representatives of the figurative wing), stood out from the general selection on offer. It was more oriented towards photography and pieces revisiting traditional works in ink in a contemporary vein: both trends in the current Chinese scene. We were able to see works by the star Liu Wei, born in 1965, whose work is strongly influenced by Impressionism and Expressionism. Two of his 2009 works in the pure tradition of the genre were on offer. When we were there, the director had registered a number of reservations, if not firm purchases. Light years away from its Shanghai colleague, the Ifa Gallery opted for a black and white theme, bringing together works by Jiang Shanqing – here bought mainly by French collectors (€20,000 and over) – and Wu Junyong.
