The new year (may it be a truly dazzling one for all our readers!) has already brought its share of controversy with it. No sooner had 2018 bowed out than people were already tearing each other to pieces in tweets about the appropriateness of the (albeit temporary) installation at the Paris Opera of three works (a tiara and two gilded tyres) by French artist Claude Levêque: that eternal debate over the mingling of contemporary art and heritage… But there was unanimous praise for the awarding of one of France's highest distinctions to Nathalie Bondil, current director of the Montreal Fine Arts Museum: the Légion d'Honneur, which simultaneously acclaimed the whole profession. This issue covers the romance that developed ten years ago between luxury hotels and the visual arts, as well as the new edition of BRAFA, which goes from strength to strength, as witness its increasing attendance figures and remarkable pieces. Meanwhile, French auction rooms are shaping up to re-enter the fray, many galvanised by mounting results, while the Hôtel Drouot maintains its position as France's leading auction venue with €376 million and 224 pre-emptions and acquisitions under its belt. While awaiting a more detailed calendar, we provide a glimpse of upcoming sales, not to mention a rundown of the finest results at the end of the year.

It's an unstoppable force! With 65,000 visitors in 2018, the BRAFA came close to TEFAF's score – 68,000 visitors in March last year – and topped the 53,244 admissions of the Biennale Paris. Morgan Haquenne from the Baronian gallery considers it the "finest fair after the TEFAF, though still maintaining its intimate feel," while Marie-Christine Bonola of the Berès gallery considers it "an essential platform in the heart of Europe, where we are beginning to see customers from all over the world."
